THE RIDE home seemed to go on forever. They stopped at Bergdorf’s along the way, and Hunter got an amazing silk shirt that felt as light and slick on his skin as he hoped Monty would when he was finally able to get him home… alone. He found a color that looked okay to him, and Monty said it would go beautifully with his other things. Hunter had Monty pick one out for himself for all his help, and Hunter got a few other things as well. The purchases were in the trunk along with their bags. Hunter sat on one of the seats with Monty across from him with his computer on his lap.
“I’ve asked you before, but don’t you ever stop?”
“I guess not.” Monty’s phone rang, and he and Helen talked for a while. “Okay. I’ll make those additions and changes.” He hung up and continued working. “Sometimes I swear trying to keep up with your schedule is nearly as difficult as it would be for the president. The dang thing seems to change by the hour. Garvin set you up with a meeting next week to put your face on a cereal box or something. Maybe they want you to do commercials for the cereal. It’s at his office, and I have it on the schedule. She said Garvin is still fuming about the article, but your publicist is apparently having a field day with it, talking about your love of the game and playing in Central Park.”
“I told you everything would be okay.”
“Yeah, but while we were playing football, it was more than that when they snapped that picture.”
“Yeah, I know. But no one needs to know that until we want to talk about it.” Hunter sat back, watching Monty as he worked.
“One more thing,” Monty said. “I know you’re being nice and all, but you don’t need to be buying me things. The jersey was nice, and I like the shirt, I really do, but it was too much. You shouldn’t spend your money on me like that.”
“But you looked nice in it, and—”
“That isn’t the point. I don’t want to be bought and paid for. Just treat me well. I know you were being nice, but being good to me is more important than buying me stuff.” Monty turned his attention back to his computer, and Hunter tried to make sense of what he’d just said.
“That’s the same thing.” He was getting confused. Hunter knew he wasn’t the smartest bulb on the string. Lord, that had been made perfectly clear to him his entire life. “Play football and play hard so you’ll make it big. It’s your only chance.” His father’s words from when Hunter was twelve still rang in his ears too damn often.
“No, it isn’t. Being nice to people is taking them out to dinner, saying pleasant things. It’s easy and superficial. Like today when you were having trouble in the photo shoot. You looked great on the outside, but there was nothing underneath.
